In 1979, Voyager 1 was the first to glimpse Jupiter's auroras, discovering that they were especially active in ultraviolet light. Voyager snapped a picture of a bright auroral streak stretching for 18,000 miles across the planet. Instead of merely doing a flyby like the Voyager spacecraft, Juno will orbit Jupiter and study its auroras in unprecedented detail.
